Description

A biosensor produces a signal proportional in strength or frequency to the concentration of biochemical to which its biological component reacts. This book describes the design, construction, optimization and application of the biological component, its attachment to the transducer and interfacing of the sensing element to appropriate electronic circuitry. In addition, typical applications of the sensor are described along with any pretreatment of the sample that may be necessary to remove interferences or ensure linearity of the sensor's response. A final chapter on the theoretical analysis of biosensor response characteristics is provided to aid in optimizing any device's performance. "Biosensors" provides an up-to-date account of techniques which will find widespread application by life scientists in universities and industry.Table of ContentUnmediated amperometric enzyme electrodes, George S.Wilson (University of Kansas, USA) and Daniel R.Thevenot (Universite Paris Val de Marne, France); mediated amperometric enzyme electrodes, H.Allen O.Hill (University of Oxford) and Gurdial S.Sanghera (University of Oxford); conducting organic salt electrodes, P.N.Bartlett (University of Warwick); immunoelectrodes, Nicola C.Foulds et al; conductimetric and impedimetric devices, Douglas B.Kell (University College of Wales) and Christopher L.Davey (University College of Wales); microbial biosensors, Isao Karube (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan) and Masayasu Suzuki (Gesellschaft fur Biotechnologische Forschung, Germany); semiconductor field effect devices, Fredrik Winquist (Linkoping University, Sweden) and Bengt Danielsson (University of Lund, Sweden); semiconductor thermometric sensors, Bengt Danielsson and Fredrik Winquist; theoretical methods for analysing biosensor performance, Mark J.Eddowes (Thorn EMI Central Research Laboratories, UK)
